January 29 - February 2

A Few Things:
1. Author's Visit- Dianne Aston will be visiting 1st and 2nd graders on January 29
2.  Walk to Read- All envelopes will be due on Feb. 2. We  would also like to encourage each child to donate a gently used hard cover book to the Libraries in Africa. Thank you so much for your continual support!
3. Snack of the week is snap peas.
LME News-

1. Join us for and “E2 and You” Cluster Tour

We invite parents to join Trevor Hance, Coordinator for Enrichment and the Environment, on an E2 and You tour to see all the exciting things our 2nd and 3rd graders are doing in their clusters. The tours will be from 8:00-9:00am on Friday, February 9th and Friday, February 23rd . Please click here to RSVP so we know how many people to expect for the sessions.
2. Parent Climate Survey Now Available: Round Rock ISD would like input from families about Laurel Mountain and the district at large via the annual climate survey. Administrators carefully analyze this data to inform school improvement goals, so your voice and opinion matters. This survey is completely anonymous and takes between 5-10 minutes. Please fill out a separate survey for each student by February 9, 2018. We appreciate hearing from you! Click here to take the survey in English.
3. Save the Date: February 20th LME Spirit Day at Phil’s Ice House/Amy’s Ice Cream: LME Spirit Day will be at Phil’s Ice House/Amy’s Ice Cream on Tuesday, February 20th. Look out for more information coming soon.

What are we doing this week: ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​  
Reading- We will begin our Fables unit.  
Writing/Grammar-   The students will begin pre-writing a "How- To" piece on making paper.
Spelling- Long o spelling pattern -ow, -ough
Math -  Students will learn how to find area in a plane shape, review 2D and 3D shapes and take a post test.  We will begin our fraction unit with finding equal parts.  
Science Students observe, describe and distinguish between natural and man-made resources. Natural resources such as rocks, soil, plants, water, and air occur through natural processes in, on, and above the Earth’s surface. We will begin studying about fresh water trouts for the 2nd Grade Enrichment Project.
Social Studies- Students will make a map and include a title, date, key, symbols and compass rose. They will identify continents and oceans on a world map.

    January 17-19

    Report cards: Report cards are going home in the Monday folder. Please look for them in the manila envelope. Please sign and return the envelope by Friday. The report card is for you to keep.

    What we are doing this week:
    Reading- We will continue to talk about Author's purpose. Students will choose books from their book box and explain to their classmates the author's purpose (persuade, entertain or inform). They will give details that supports this.
    Writing/Grammar-   The students will write and share how authors write using one topic (to persuade, entertain or inform).
    Spelling- We will review spelling patterns in class so there are no spelling list going home this week.
    Math -  Students will review adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping.  They will take a post unit test and benchmark test.  
    Science- Students will compare and contrast freshwater and saltwater.
    Social Studies- Students will begin learning how to read a map. We will talk about the various features found on a map... compass rose, key, title, scale.

    Last Call to Buy your LME Yearbook!: If you haven’t already ordered your 2017-2018 LME Yearbook, now is your chance! Our school yearbook will arrive in May and chances are, your child will want one. However, the yearbook must be pre-ordered. The cost is $25 and our deadline is Friday, January 26th. So don’t delay and order yours today from our PTA Store. Not sure if you’ve already ordered a yearbook? Check this list here.
    Science Fair Needs More Volunteers!: There are still setup and cleanup slots available for Science Fair this week. Please consider contributing your time on Wednesday, January 17 or Thursday, January 18. Sign up to help here.
    More Sign-up Parties: A sign-up party is another way the PTA is raising funds that would directly benefit the kids at LME. There are still slots available for the following Sign-Up Parties:
    • Indoor Rock Climbing (2nd and 3rd Grades)
    • Ninja Warriors (Kinder - First Grades)
    • Skee Ball Party at Full Circle Bar (adults)
    • Women and Wine (adult women)

    Gifted and Advanced Academic Services Parent Conference Saturday, January 20th: All parents are invited to register for and attend the Gifted and Advanced Services Parent Conference being held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Pearson Ranch Middle School from 9:00 am-12:00 pm with a Summer Enrichment Fair following from 12:00-2:00 pm. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Susannah Richards, expert in children's literature and high ability readers.
